_Yeah, Baby!

First place, Best in Show, People's Choice! That's $2,000, plus a full scholarship to the culinary school of my choice! :-D

This was a very valuable learning experience. I've found out that cake decorating really isn't my thing. But cake baking is. That is, combining flavors, optimizing the cake texture, etc. There was a cake tasting competition (Italian Cream and Chocolate cakes), and if I'd had time, I would have entered a chocolate cake. Oh well.

APRIL FOOLS!! ;-)

Seriously, the thing I said about cake decorating is true. And the thing I said about the chocolate cake is also true. I didn't get first place, but I did get fourth... out of four entries.... I totally didn't expect to get anything.

On the other hand, I went into this competition with no formal training, one week to design, plan and execute, and only 8 hours of work on the cake. People have been planning their cakes since last year's competition, they have time to execute their designs, and they know what they're doing.

I did pick up some pointers from the various seminars though. Too bad I don't have time to try them out....

From the judges' comments sheet: "Neat idea!!" So I get points for creativity, but I got points docked for technique. Ultimately, it's technique that wins this kind of thing.

so i guess you'll be off to the big apple. at least they have good chinese food.

Hm... I forgot about that. It's a 2-hour train ride from Poughkepsie to NYC, so it'd be a really good daytrip. Sweet! :-)
